Surfing Lessons With Jake

Jake came to the island in March to start school at BYU-Hawaii.  We had about a week with him before he had to be up at school.  I had been wanting to take surfing lessons for a long time and when he said he would do it with me I signed us up through Waikiki Beach Services and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.  Isa was our instructor and he was totally cool!  Check out those dreadlocks dude!!

We had some epic fails and some successes too. Surfing is hard!  You have to be really strong in the arms and be able to go from a lying down  position to standing up sideways in a matter of seconds, and not put any amount of extra weight on the front of the back leg unless you are ready to turn. Scott stood on the beach and cheered us on and took this awesome pictures.

We took Jake to our favorite beaches, hikes and restaurants and the kids loved playing with him.

Meeting a hammerhead shark at Sea Life Park

feeding the birds, 4 were on him at the same time!!!

We dropped him off for his 1st semester and he quickly got a job as a canoe guide at the Polynesian Cultural Center.  It was fun to watch him do his thing when we would come visit!
