Fall 2018 Rylan Attempted Band & Cross Country

Rylan was hesitant to try marching band, he knew it would be a struggle memorizing music and learning to march, but he tried it and ended up loving it.  His marching band practiced 4 times a week for 3 hours each, plus had multiple all day Saturday practices.  They competed in multiple competitions all over the state of Kentucky and did very well for their size of the school. Scott volunteered to drive the equipment truck many times and was able to help set up props and help support the band in many capacities. He thought he would just be driving and then relaxing and watching them perform, but they put him to work. They also marched in the Heartland Parade:

On their last competition of the season, all of the parents waited for their bus on a Sunday afternoon and we cheered for them as they drove into the high school parking lot.  The sheriff escorted them from the freeway to the school. It was a really special moment to celebrate all their hard work!

Rylan loved doing cross country in Hawaii, but we were too late to join in last year when we moved in in August. So he was thrilled to be able to join this fall. Because of the huge time commitment band was he wasn't able to practice as much as the team or participate in as many meets. But the meets he was able to run in he did very well and was put on the Varsity team. They were a great group of boys, and they knelt in prayer before every race together.  He did get a sprained ankle and fell a couple times in the mud, so we learned that we should probably get him some running spikes for next year.  His PR for the season was 19:47 for 3 miles.

All of these activities, PLUS the addition of early morning seminary at the church we saw a lot of utter exhaustion in our growing boy and an increase in our food bill to keep him nourished.  He would come home and drop everything for a good nap on the couch or even the floor.  Also when we would drive 10 minutes to somewhere he would take a quick 8-minute nap.  He also kept his grades up and we were pretty proud of him for enduring such a busy fall.
